Using Working Sets

Overview

Working Sets can be used in Eclipse to simplify the view in the Package Explorer.  This does nothing other than changes how the elements are viewed in the Package Explorer.  When working with a lot of projects it can greatly simplify the view.

Working Sets in Eclipse

Start by clicking the arrow shown in figure 1 and selecting ‘Top Level Elements -> Working Sets’

Figure 1  Setting up Working Sets

This will bring up the dialog box shown in figure 2.

Figure 2  Configure Working Sets Dialog

Select ‘New…’ to create a new working set.  Since the workspace in this example has only ESF Foundation bundles I will create an ESF Foundation working set.  To do so set the Working set name to ‘ESF Foundation’ and then click the ‘Add All -->’ button as shown in figure 3.  This will move all of the projects in the workspace to the ESF Foundation working set.  Click ‘Finish’.

Figure 3  Creating a New Working Set

Now you can add another working set for your custom projects.  In this case let’s call the working set ‘My Projects’.  Since we haven’t created any custom projects yet we won’t add anything to it.  You should now have a ‘Configure Working Sets’ dialog box that look what is shown in figure 4.

Click OK and you should now be back in the main Eclipse window.  You will notice you now have working sets that can be collapsed and expanded as shown in figure 5.  You can modify the working sets or go back to a flat project view by clicking the same down arrow shown in figure 1.
